Hey guys, I just got a call from the dean:

Unfortunately, though we've been doing our best to get the plowing and shoveling done, Donnelly School is not yet prepared for classes in the morning. So there will be no class on on January 24th.

I'm sure you're all upset. I'm also scoring some hot chocolate cookies so we can have a celebration in the lounge!

Hey, guys! I just want to let you all know I'm looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday--dorms open at 9! Finals start Friday, so good luck, and don't stress too much.

Reminder to everyone! The last day of classes for the semester is this Friday, the 17th. You have until Monday to move out of your dorms for the winter, and if you absolutely can't be out by then, you MUST pick up a form from me and get it filled out ASAP.

You have break to complete any final projects, and exams begin the week we return. Good luck! Email me or knock on my door if you have any problems.

Notes for the hall [Oct. 8th, 2004|02:17 am]

Okay, guys, I don't want to have to call an emergency hall meeting, and I sure as hell don't want to go to Student Life about this stuff, so a few notes which you had better pay attention to, or there'll be serious consequences:

Curfew is 9 PM.

It is very, very important for your own safety that you be here when I knock on your door. I know how easy it is to get caught up in what you're doing elsewhere, but you are obligated to be in at nine. It's a school rule, and you face some serious disciplinary action if you break it. Suspension, expulsion, that kind of thing.

If you're not here, I call Student Life, and SL calls the police.

No one wants that. So be home. I've been letting you all get away with more than I should have, because SL is such a pain and I've had a pretty good idea what's been going on--but no more. I can't risk it. You must be here by curfew.

Second: absolutely no illegal substances.

Y'all, pot is not legal. I don't care how minor a drug you consider it to be, it's still illegal and, again, results in serious disciplinary action. So don't do it. And if you do do it, which you shouldn't, don't post about it in a public forum that you know I read, or I'll have to take action.

Finally, please be respectful of other students on the hall. I know people have been fighting lately, and I understand a lot of people's perspectives on it, but I'd like it if the place could be kept generally peaceful. And, as always, I'm here should anyone need to talk.

Friendly reminders from your neighborhood RA. Take them to heart.

Okay, guys.

I'm your RA, not your parent, so I've tried to not get involved in all the fighting that's been going on around here, and hoping it would work itself out.

But I just got a call from my boss at Student Life, and things have gone beyond this hall. They've been getting complaints from the GSA about hate speech, and though I don't think they fully understand the situation, a lot of if it has to do with things on this hall.

Every hall is being required to have a workshop about tolerance and empathy within the next 48 hours. Ours is scheduled for 8 PM tomorrow (that's Sunday) night; we'll be meeting in the lounge with one of the school councilors.

It's very important that everyone--and I do mean everyone--attends. The school will be administering consequences for people who don't show up, and I've been told they'll be serious. Student Life is taking this whole thing very seriously.

In the mean time, I'm happy to discuss problems with anyone who wants to talk with me; I'll be in my room all day today and tomorrow, except for meals, if you need me.

a few notes [Sep. 6th, 2004|03:09 pm]

Hey, guys, just a few things to remind you all,

1) I'm under 21. You're all under 21. Everyone here is under 21. Thus, there should be no alcohol anywhere in this building. I really don't want to have to bust anyone for it, so please just don't bring it on to the hall.

2) Classes start tomorrow! If you have any schedule problems, you should email our guidance office tonight to set up an appointment.

3) The first week is uniform-free while everyone gets set and the new freshman uniforms arrive, so if you have any problems (are missing pieces, need to order a new set, whatever) there are forms for it on my door. But you're all expected to be wearing uniforms by next Tuesday.

4) Blink's first soccer game is tomorrow at four, so you should all try and go support your hallmate!

5) Please remember, I'm happy to moderate if you're having a problem with your roommate or someone on the hall, but only within reason. I hope you all know what counts as acceptable behavior.

I think that's it for now. Have a good first day tomorrow!

I am writing this from Blink's computer. (And thank God SOMEONE here isn't a total asshole and actually lets me crash.) Why? Because I have been fucking SEXILED.

That's right.

Race and Mush are going at it like bunnies in there. Behind the LOCKED DOOR. MY FUCKING LOCKED DOOR. Where is my key? Ask Race. Oh, wait, you can't. BECAUSE HE'S HAVING GAY SEX IN MY ROOM.

Apparently this was some sort of secret. Oops.

Fuck this. I'm getting Tag to open the door. I should be able to get into my own room.

Assholes.

The hall meeting results! [Sep. 2nd, 2004|01:07 am]

Hey everyone!

Tonight's meeting was great, I'm really glad to see everyone got to school safely... But a reminder, mandatory meetings are mandatory, and I don't want to have to take attendance at them or anything, but I really do need you to show up.

Anyway, here's the basic hall guidelines we came up with. I'll be putting these up on a big poster in the hall, too, just so no one forgets. ;)

Kitchen:
All dishes must be cleaned and put away IMMEDIATELY. Nothing should sit in the sink or the drainer.
Please wipe down all counters after you use them, and put away all of your cooking stuff--properly. We don't want mice on the hall. Or roaches. Or any other nasty bugs or whatever.
Only use what you buy. It's not okay to sample from other people's fridge space, unless you've gotten permission first. (I'll be putting a bowl out on one of the counters, where dry, non-spoiling communal foods can be put; please make use of it!)
Generally be neat about everything you do in the kitchen. It'll make everyone's stay here nicer.

Bathroom:
Clean up after yourself. No toothpaste left in the sink, no hair left in drains, and... um... aim well when you go, please.
You're allowed to leave a basket of toiletries beneath the benches in the bathroom; not on it, please.
Please do wear a robe to and from the showers. Please.

Lounge:
Clean up after yourself. Crumbs will bring ants, so keep in mind there's a cleaning closet right behind the last couch, complete with a vacuum.
Please put the couches back where they go when you're done rearranging them.
Warn me, at least, if you have a visitor who'll be sleeping on a couch in the lounge.
Please don't steal the chairs or tables. They're there for everyone's use.

Hall:
Absolutely no leaving shoes in the hallway, or anything else. Besides being a fire hazard, it's just gross.
Speaking of gross, if your shoes are muddy or wet, please take them off before you step out into the hall, so we don't get a muddy, wet carpet.
Just generally be considerate that the hall is shared space.
Brooms are to be used for sweeping purposes only. I don't get this one, but Mush was quite insistent.

Everything Else:
Your RA (that's me) is here to help out when you need it, but if you're having a problem with your roommate or someone else on the hall, please try to settle it yourselves, first. I'll help moderate a discussion if you need it, but you should always explain your problem politely and suggest a solution yourself before coming to me.
That said, my door's always open! Come on in if you need help or just want to chat.
QUIET HOURS ARE 9 PM TO 8 AM on week days, and 11 PM to 11 AM on weekends.
CURFEW IS 9 PM on weekdays and 10 PM on weekends.

I'm required to check all of your rooms to make sure you're there at nine, but you can move around the hall after that. However, you can't LEAVE the hall. And if you're going to spend the night elsewhere (or brining someone to spend the night on the hall) there's a form I need you to fill out--I'll put copies of it in a folder on my door.
Not being present when I do my headcheck will result in severe consequences.

All that said, this is really just to remind you of what you already know--be considerate to the people on your hall, and they will be of you. After all, we're stuck with each other for quite awhile still!

Feel free to leave any questions here or to drop by and ask. I'm right in the middle of the hall, very easy to find.
